A covenant in the ancient world was similar to what we in the modern world would call a contract, treaty, or a will. Each covenant established the basis of a relationship, conditions for that relationship, promises and conditions of the relationship and consequences if those conditions were unmet. One of the most familiar examples of a covenant for us is marriage.
Why do I think understanding covenant is so important? It is because the covenants provide the skeletal framework for how the whole biblical story holds together. As the story of the Bible unfolds, we see God as being a covenant maker, covenant keeping, and covenant fulfilling God. God established covenants with certain people, and these covenants were the way God unfolded his redemptive plan. The covenants are the structure of the story.
As believers in Jesus Christ have you ever considered making a covenant with God in this day and age? I want to encourage you to think about doing so! Over the next few months, let us make some new creation covenants with God (2 Corinthians 5:17). How about start with a covenant between our eyes and God. You may be wondering why this would be important? Because sometimes we need to remind ourselves of just how important our eyes are in our spiritual walk with the Lord. So, let’s start one now. Job states in 31:1 that he made a covenant with his eyes. Today, I make a covenant with my eyes and and with You because my eyes are…
·
Attentive. I will not miss anything that You are trying to show me (2 Corinthians 4:18).
Focused. My eyes will focus on things that are pleasing to You (Hebrews 12:2).
Functioning. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. My eyes are operating the way they were designed (Psalm 239:14).
Good. My eyes will look upon good and not evil (Matthew 6:22-23).
Light. My eyes are the lamp of my body. When they are healthy, my whole body is full of light (Luke 11:34).
Open. I can see wonderous things that You have in front of me (Psalm 119:18).
Restored. My eyes are strong (Mark 8:25).
Spiritual. My eyes are opened by the Holy Spirit to see beyond the natural realm (Matthew 6:22).
Surrendered. My eyes will be surrendered to the Holy Spirit to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple to behold His power and glory (Proverbs 23:26).
Truth. My eyes will see the truth in people (John 14:20).
Understanding. My eye has not seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for Him (Isaiah 64:4).
Useful. My eyes will be useful for reading and studying the Word in order to build myself and others up in faith .
Very valuable. I will not set anything worthless before my eyes (Psalm 101:3).
Father, thank You for my eyes. May they be utilized for your glory. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen!
